It was in Bagnone, in the heart of the Lunigiana region, that we met up with Stefania and Giovanni, expatriate Aurovilians, with whom we spent two and a half weeks.

Lunigiana, literally “Land of the Moon,” takes its name from the ancient Etruscan city of Luni, a Roman colony founded in 177 BC.

The region has become desertified over the years, due to the lack of jobs in industry or services for the local population. However, it is beginning to attract a new international population of remote workers (digital workers), sensitive to environmental protection and reconnection with nature, to human relationships less oriented towards commercialism and more towards benevolence and mutual aid, where life regains its meaning and its ultimate purpose of bringing us closer to the Divine.

We interviewed members of an Association (https://start-working.it) in Pontremoli, which takes care of welcoming such people, on the theme of “Organisation from Inner Guidance” and their sensitivity and work practices are very similar to certain communities we have encountered, and very close to Auroville’s ideals (link).

In reality, the general context of Lunigiana is very favourable to welcoming, temporarily or long-term, Aurovilians and sympathisers of Auroville’s ideals and spirit. The preserved natural environment and the majestic presence of the surrounding mountains, the international context of the people settling here, the proximity of highway and airport networks, the possibility of hospitality and the availability of low-priced houses due to the desertification of the region and, finally, the prospect of working for the collective good and the next shift in consciousness, are very attractive parameters for Aurovilians who would like to participate in the adventure.

Our two friends, Stefania and Giovanni, have already been working there for a few years. They have chosen to settle here and promote the region, to create a network for spreading the teachings of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo. They have developed a project to spread Integral Yoga in northern Italy, in the form of progressive workshops, which resonates well with the InnerBeing project. Here is how they present themselves:

“Giovanni and Stefania have been living in Auroville for more than 15 years and managed Serendipity (ex Joy Community) for more than 10. They moved to Italy in Tuscany a couple of years ago and from their experience in managing guests, groups, and volunteers, they recently started a project (www.auroluni.org) to spread Integral Yoga and the spirit of Auroville for a collective growth in Italy and Europe by establishing a diffuse community in Tuscany and collaborating in the development of an international network of centres, community and people. At the moment, they are focusing in organising a free series of 4 introductory workshops of integral yoga in various parts of Italy that are super interactive, experiential and based on sharing, so that suit very well and touch very diverse people, from people completely new to yoga or specifically integral yoga to Aurovilians and people who have been helping translating Satprem and the agenda since the 70′ – 80′. The biggest gift that everyone says to receive is a sense of feeling together in a “spiritual” path where most of the people in the West feel alone. At the moment the main base is in a beautiful huge country house belonging to a friend, surrounded by rivers, waterfalls and mountains. They will further organize residential events and retreats both in Italian and English from this coming summer and at the same time try to start hosting people and Aurovilians in a regular basis as this is already happening a lot with friends and more (including various Aurovilians). This 9th newsletter is the last in the “Pilgrim” motorhome series. We have written four for Italy, and we realise that we could very well have chosen to settle in the three regions corresponding to the previous letters: Sicily, Bari and Città della Pieve. We were invited there and their respective communities share with us the same goal of consciousness expansion and human unity. Italy represents for us an undeniable ground for development, both personal and for the InnerBeing project.

On the other hand, we have also encountered in recent weeks communities that did not wish to meet us, either they did not respond to our meeting requests (Il Popolo Degli Elfi), or they just offered us a slice of pizza and a reiki treatment (paid) as a meeting (La Città Della Luce), or they asked us for (paid) membership in their organisation as a prerequisite to any interaction with them (Ecovillaggio Lumen).

In reality, we understand that creating a community and openly displaying oneself as an organisation promoting paradigm shift does not necessarily imply a disinterested openness towards others, or a conscious elevation of humanistic or spiritual standards of existence following an individual and collective daily practice of Integral Yoga. If what primarily characterises an isolated individual is their feeling of separation from what surrounds them, we have encountered many groups that tend to reproduce at a community scale identical patterns of withdrawal and mistrust towards others, creating de facto a new selfish and isolated organism, more complex than a single person but still of centripetal activity. Haven’t these groups gradually deviated from their original goals to indulge in a spirituality of words rather than behaviour?

Today, following these understandings that we share with you, Svenja, Valya and I have decided to join Stefania and Giovanni in their project to create a new space of fraternity oriented on Auroville’s ideals. We are going to sell “Pilgrim” and come settle in Lunigiana.

Italie 4, les portails de Lunigiana

C’est à Bagnone, au cœur de la région Lunigiana, que nous avons retrouvé Stefania et Giovanni, Auroviliens expatriés, avec lesquels nous avons passé 2 semaines et demi.

Lunigiana, littéralement « Terre de la Lune », tire son nom de l’ancienne cité étrusque de Luni, une colonie romaine fondée en 677 av. J.-C. 

La région s’est désertifiée au fil des années, en raison du manque de travail en manufacture ou en service pour la population locale. Elle commence pourtant à attirer une nouvelle population internationale de travailleurs à distance (digital workers), sensibilisés à la protection de l’environnement et au rapprochement vers la nature, à des relations humaines moins orientées vers le mercantilisme et davantage tournées vers la bienveillance et l’entraide, où la vie retrouve son sens et son but ultime de nous faire rejoindre le Divin.

Nous avons interviewé des membres d’une Association (https://start-working.it) à Pontremoli, qui s’occupe d’accueillir de telles personnes, sur le thème d’ «Organisation à partir d’une guidance intérieure» et leur sensibilité et pratiques de travail sont très semblables à certaines communautés que nous avons rencontrées, et très proches des idéaux d’Auroville (lien).

En réalité, le contexte général de Lunigiana est très favorable à l’accueil, temporaire ou long-terme, d’Auroviliens et de sympathisants des idéaux et de l’esprit d’Auroville. L’environnement naturel préservé et la présence majestueuse des montagnes alentour, le contexte international des personnes qui s’installent ici, la proximité des réseaux autoroutier et aérien, la possibilité d’accueil et la disponibilité de maisons à bas prix, dues à la désertification de la région et, pour finir, la perspective d’œuvrer pour le bien collectif et le prochain changement de conscience, sont des paramètres très attractifs pour des Auroviliens qui souhaiteraient participer à l’aventure.

Nos deux amis, Stefania et Giovanni y travaillent déjà depuis quelques années, ils ont fait le choix de s’installer ici et de promouvoir la région, de créer un réseau pour la diffusion des enseignements de Mère et de Sri Aurobindo. Ils ont développé un projet de diffusion du Yoga Intégral dans le nord de l’Italie, sous forme d’ateliers progressifs, qui résonne bien avec le projet InnerBeing. Voici comment ils se présentent eux-mêmes : 

« Giovanni et Stefania vivent à Auroville depuis plus de 15 ans et ont géré Serendipity (anciennement Joy Community) pendant plus de 10 ans. Installés en Toscane depuis quelques années, ils mettent à profit leur expérience dans l’accueil de visiteurs, de groupes et de bénévoles pour lancer récemment un projet (www.auroluni.org) visant à diffuser le Yoga Intégral et l’esprit d’Auroville. Ce projet contribue à l’épanouissement collectif en Italie et en Europe en créant une communauté diffuse en Toscane et en participant au développement d’un réseau international de centres, de communautés et de personnes. Actuellement, ils organisent une série gratuite de quatre ateliers d’initiation au Yoga Intégral dans différentes régions d’Italie. Ces ateliers, interactifs et expérientiels, sont basés sur le partage et s’adressent à un public très diversifié, des débutants en yoga ou en yoga intégral aux Auroviliens et aux personnes qui contribuent à la traduction de Satprem et de son agenda depuis les années 70-80. Le plus beau cadeau que tous disent recevoir est le sentiment de partager un cheminement spirituel commun, là où la plupart des Occidentaux se sentent seuls. Actuellement, le groupe est basé dans une magnifique et vaste maison de campagne appartenant à un ami, entourée de rivières, de cascades et de montagnes. Dès cet été, ils organiseront des séjours et des retraites en italien et en anglais, et s’efforceront d’accueillir régulièrement des personnes et des Auroviliens, comme ils le font déjà fréquemment avec des amis et d’autres personnes (dont plusieurs Auroviliens). Cette 9ème lettre d’information est la dernière de la série du camping-car «Pilgrim». Nous en avons écrit quatre pour l’Italie, et nous réalisons que nous aurions très bien pu choisir de nous installer dans les trois régions correspondantes aux précédentes lettres : Sicile, Bari et Città Della Pieve. Nous y étions invités et leurs communautés respectives partagent avec nous le même but d’expansion de conscience et d’unité humaine. L’Italie représente pour nous un incontestable terreau de développement, tant personnel que pour le projet InnerBeing.

D’un autre côté, nous avons aussi rencontré ces dernières semaines des communautés qui ne souhaitaient pas nous rencontrer, soit qu’elles n’ont pas répondu à nos demandes de rencontre (Il Popolo Degli Elfi), soit qu’elles nous ont juste proposé une part de pizza et un soin reiki (payant) en guise de rencontre (La Citta Della Luce), soit  qu’elles nous ont demandé l’adhésion (payante) à leur organisation en préalable à toute interaction avec eux (Ecovillaggio Lumen).

En réalité, nous comprenons que créer une communauté et s’afficher ouvertement en organisation promouvant le changement de paradigme, n’implique pas forcément une ouverture désintéressée vers l’autre, ou une élévation consciente des standards humanistes ou spirituels d’existence consécutives à une pratique journalière individuelle et collective du Yoga Intégral. Si ce qui caractérise primairement un individu isolé est son sentiment de séparation avec ce qui l’entoure, nous avons rencontré de nombreux groupes qui tendent à reproduire à une échelle communautaire d’identiques schémas de repli sur soi et de méfiance envers l’autre, créant de facto un nouvel organisme égoïste et isolé, plus complexe qu’une personne seule mais toujours d’activité centripète. Ces groupes n’ont-ils pas peu à peu dévié de leurs buts d’origine pour se complaire dans une spiritualité de mots plutôt que de comportement ?

Aujourd’hui, à la suite de ces compréhensions que nous partageons avec vous, Svenja, Valya et moi avons décidé de rejoindre Stefania et Giovanni dans leur projet de créer un nouvel espace de fraternité orienté sur les idéaux d’Auroville. Nous allons vendre «Pilgrim» et venir nous installer en Lunigiana.
