On the road: From Barcelona, we cross the Mediterranean to Italy, taking the ferry to Civitavecchia. The weather is beautiful all along, but we arrive exhausted the next day, as if our subtle bodies had dissolved in the sea and were struggling to find their physical double again. Water is highly conductive, it breaks down electromagnetic constructions (our thoughts), and we are a bit more cut off from our roots, more nomadic than ever.

We head to Pompeii where we spend New Year’s Day, packed like sardines in a field hosting twice as many camper vans as expected. The firecrackers frighten Valya who has several panic attacks.
Then, after a few nights in Calabria, we go down to Sicily.

During the holiday period, individuals and communities are with their families, and we prefer to go directly down to Sicily to see our friends from “Auroville Everywhere,” to prepare our itinerary that will take us across Italy from bottom to top, meeting new bridges to Auroville.

Noto, Sicily: Our final destination is Masseria Donna Giulia (an old agricultural building under restoration), in the municipality of Noto, at Antonella and Enzo’s* place, former UNESCO collaborators and long-time friends of Auroville.

The large building provides the framework, flanked by a yurt where Kriss and Antony live, and our camper van naturally finds its place: 2 Italian travellers, a Dutch/Canadian couple, our “Pilgrim-team,” Valya and 4 cats: A community is being built here!

We feel a natural closeness with Enzo and Antonella, whose “Auroville Everywhere” project has many similarities with the interviews about Mother’s Dream that we conduct with people who don’t know Auroville. Imagining that Mother’s Dream could apply not in a given place in South India but to the whole world, brings us spontaneously closer.

2 days later, we have our first sharing session (in English) with the four of them on the theme of how to organise ourselves and be in relationship from a space of compassion, and we join the sharing (link).

The following Sunday, our hosts organised a gathering day around Auroville. In the morning, Svenja and I present Auroville and answer questions. At one point, Valya comes too close to us and knocks down a frame representing the galaxy and the charter. In the afternoon, we answer questions about the InnerBeing project.

A few days later, we conduct a new interview, in Italian and via Zoom this time, about Mother’s Dream, with Aurovilians, academics familiar with Auroville, our hosts and ourselves (link). Other conversations of the same kind will follow throughout our journey in Italy.

We meet other people connected to their inner guidance, particularly a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, with whom we share a meal and who will be interviewed later about the Dream in his native language, and a nun from the order of Padre John (1928 – 2009) who founded the association “Ricostruttori Nella Preghiera” (The Reconstructors in Prayer), introducing meditation into Catholic religious practice. Finally, we plan a discussion with our hosts on the “Sacred Couple,” whose link will be shared in
our next newsletter about Italy.

Back in Calabria, I learn how to graft peach trees onto almond trees and my grafting master gives me 3 peach shoots to graft along my way, for future generations. This idea of making grafts on our path resonates strongly with the InnerBeing Project, where it’s about sowing seeds without expecting immediate results, just sowing for collective well-being….

• Enzo & Antonella: After more than thirty years spent between Paris and Africa, Enzo and Antonella now live in Sicily in an old farm between Syracuse and Noto, the “Masseria Donna Giulia.” This farm, partially restored, is surrounded by 46 hectares of land where they grow organic ancient wheat and hay, in a natural landscape rich in water and archaeological remains. Inspired by the heart connections they maintain with Auroville, Enzo and Antonella wish to bring this place to life in a spirit of sharing, harmony and healing. They have thus committed themselves to restoring the other buildings of the farm which will be able to host educational, cultural and personal development activities. Since their arrival in this region of Sicily, they have also helped build a network of residents who love this territory and are committed to its preservation and enhancement (www.abitaregliiblei.it). In a broader horizon, Enzo and Antonella believe that it is possible to bring “Auroville Everywhere” to life on our planet by growing the spirit of Auroville in our hearts and around us.
  Antonella Verdiani, pedagogue, book author and trainer, currently dedicates herself to supporting alternative educational projects and to the co-creation of a residential/educational habitat in Sicily. At UNESCO (1987-2005), she worked on peace education. Her doctoral thesis in Educational Sciences (2007) was titled “Education for Joy: an experience in the integral education schools of Auroville,” a community based on the ideal of Human Unity, which continues to inspire her also in the development of the eco-habitat in Sicily. From 2012 to 2020, she directed the association “Printemps de l’Éducation”, with the aim of bringing together actors of change in the French
  educational landscape.
  Enzo Fazzino began his career at UNESCO in 1987 in Senegal. Since 1990, he has worked at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, handling various intersectoral projects, including “Planet Society,” an international network for exchanging resources for sustainable development. From 1998 until 2021, he held various responsibilities within the Culture of Peace program, in Paris and in Africa, where he directed the UNESCO office in Gabon and in Angola, a country from which he coordinated the Luanda Biennale for a Culture of Peace in Africa. Retired from UNESCO, since 2022 he has been living in Sicily, where he continues his personal commitment to the culture of peace, participating in local development, education and coexistence projects, with a strong connection to the founding vision of Auroville.

Italie 1 : Masseria Donna Giulia, Auroville en tous lieux

Sur la route : De Barcelone, nous traversons la Méditerranée vers l’Italie, par le ferry pour Civittavecchia. Le temps est beau tout le long, mais nous arrivons’ épuisés le lendemain, comme si nos corps subtils s’étaient dissous dans la mer et avaient du mal à retrouver leur double physique. L’eau est fortement conductrice, elle brise les constructions électromagnétiques (nos pensées), et nous sommes un peu plus coupés de nos racines, plus nomades que jamais.

Nous partons vers Pompéi où nous passons le 1er de l’an, serrés comme des sardines dans un pré qui abrite le double de camping-cars que prévus. Les pétards effrayent Valya qui fait plusieurs crises de panique. Ensuite, après quelques nuits en Calabre, nous descendons en Sicile.

En période de fête, individus et communautés sont en famille et nous préférons descendre directement en Sicile voir nos amis d’« Auroville en tous lieux », préparer notre itinéraire qui nous fera traverser l’Italie de bas en haut, à la rencontre de nouvelles passerelles vers Auroville

Noto, Sicile : Notre destination finale est la Masseria Donna Giulia (ancien domaine agricole en restauration), commune de Noto, chez Antonella et Enzo*, anciens collaborateurs de l’UNESCO et amis de longue date d’Auroville.

La grande bâtisse donne le cadre, flanquée d’une yourte où habitent Kriss et Antony, et notre camping car trouve naturellement son emplacement : 2 italiens voyageurs, un couple hollandais / canadien, notre « Pilgrim-team », Valya et 4 chats : Une communauté est en construction ici !

Nous ressentons une naturelle proximité avec Enzo et Antonella, dont le projet « Auroville en tous lieux » a beaucoup de similitudes avec les interviews sur le rêve de Mère que nous réalisons avec des personnes ne connaissant pas Auroville. Imaginer que le rêve de
Mère pourrait s’appliquer non en un lieu donné en Inde du sud mais au monde entier, nous rapproche spontanément.
2 jours plus tard, nous réalisons notre premier partage (en anglais) avec les 4 sur le thème de comment s’organiser et être en relation à partir d’un espace de compassion, et nous nous joignons au partage (lien).

Le dimanche suivant, nos hôtes ont organisé une journée de rencontre autour d’Auroville. Le matin, Svenja et moi-même présentons Auroville et répondons aux questions. À un moment, Valya s’approche trop près de nous et fait tomber un cadre représentant la galaxie et la charte. L’après-midi, nous répondons aux questions sur le projet InnerBeing.

Quelques jours plus tard, nous réalisons une nouvelle interview, en italien et par Zoom cette fois, sur le rêve de Mère, entre Auroviliens, universitaires familiers d’Auroville, nos hôtes et nous-mêmes (lien). D’autres conversations du même genre vont suivre tout au long de notre voyage en Italie.

Nous rencontrons d’autres personnes connectées à leur guidance intérieure, en particulier un moine bouddhiste Sri Lankais, avec qui nous partageons le repas et qui sera interviewé plus tard sur le Rêve dans sa langue natale, et une moniale de l’ordre de Padre John (1928 – 2009) qui a fondé l’association « I Ricostruttori Nella Preghiera » (Les Reconstructeurs en prière), introduisant la méditation au sein de la pratique religieuse catholique. Pour finir, nous prévoyons une discussion avec nos hôtes sur le « Couple Sacré », dont le lien sera partagé dans notre prochaine lettre d’informations sur l’Italie.

De retour en Calabre, je m’initie à la greffe de pêchers sur amandiers et mon maître es-greffes me donne 3 rejetons de pêcher à greffer sur ma route, pour les générations futures. Cette idée de faire des greffes sur notre chemin résonne fortement avec le InnerBeing Project, où il est question de semer des graines sans attendre de résultat immédiat, juste semer pour le bien-être collectif ….

* Antonella et Enzo : Après plus de trente année passées entre Paris et l’Afrique, Enzo et Antonella vivent maintenant en Sicile dans une ancienne ferme entre Syracuse et Noto, la « Masseria Donna Giulia ». Cette ferme, partiellement restaurée, est entouré d’un terrain de 46 hectares où ils cultivent du blé ancien biologique et du foin, dans un paysage naturel riche d’eau et de vestiges archéologiques. Inspirés par les liens de cœur qu’ils entretiennent avec Auroville, Enzo et Antonella souhaitent faire vivre ce lieu dans un esprit de partage, harmonie et guérison. Ils se sont ainsi engagés dans la restauration des autres bâtiments de la ferme qui pourront héberger des activités éducatives, culturelles et de développement personnel. Depuis leur arrivée dans cette région de la Sicile, ils ont également aidé à construire un réseau de résidents amoureux de ce territoire et engagés dans sa sauvegarde et valorisation (www.abitaregliiblei.it). Dans un horizon plus vaste, Enzo et Antonella croient qu’il est possible de faire vivre « Auroville en tout lieu » de
notre planète en faisant grandir l’esprit d’Auroville dans notre cœur et autour de nous.

Antonella Verdiani, pédagogue, autrice de livres et formatrice, se consacre actuellement à accompagner des projets éducatifs alternatifs et à la co-création d’un habitat résidentiel/ éducatif en Sicile. À l’UNESCO (1987-2005), elle s’est occupée d’éducation à la paix. Sa thèse de doctorat en Sciences de l’Éducation (2007) avait pour titre « Éducation à la joie : une expérience dans les écoles d’éducation intégrale d’Auroville », communauté basée sur l’idéal d’Unité humaine, qui continue à l’inspirer également dans le développement de
l’éco-habitat en Sicile. De 2012 à 2020, elle a dirigé l’association Printemps de l’éducation, dans le but de réunir les acteurs du changement dans le paysage éducatif français.
Enzo Fazzino a commencé sa carrière à l’UNESCO en 1987 au Sénégal. Depuis 1990, il a travaillé au Siège de l’UNESCO à Paris, s’occupant de divers projets intersectoriels, parmi lesquels « Planet Society », un réseau international d’échange de ressources pour le développement durable. De 1998 jusqu’en 2021, il a eu diverses responsabilités dans le cadre du programme pour la Culture de la Paix, à Paris et en Afrique, où il a dirigé le bureau de l’UNESCO au Gabon et en Angola, pays depuis lequel il a coordonné la Biennale de Luanda pour une Culture de Paix en Afrique. Retraité de l’UNESCO, depuis 2022 il vit en Sicile, où il poursuit son engagement personnel pour la culture de paix, participant à des projets de développement local, d’éducation et de convivialité, avec un lien fort à la vision fondatrice d’Auroville.
